Serta Air Mattress Review And Guide: Hosting Guests The Right Way

serta mattres feat-img

Have you ever slept on an air mattress? A Serta air mattress can be the difference between sleeping on a comfortable cloud all night or waking up on the hard ground. If you’ve ever used one of those cheap brands of air mattress, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

That’s why I do my research before I buy anything, air mattresses included. I do a lot of hosting. An air mattress is an essential part of my hosting gear because I can offer a complete bed to guests. I’ve had air mattresses slowly deflate on visitors throughout the night far too many times. I began to believe that all air mattresses were inadequate, but then I realized I just need to research and find the right one. If this sounds familiar to you, Serta air mattress may be one to try.

All About the Serta Air Mattress Line

Did you know that Serta is the largest bedding manufacturer in the world today? Now you do! Serta products are sold in more than 30 countries around the world, and they’re all made in the USA. The company was founded in 1931. That’s more than 80 years of experience making mattresses and pillows!

That’s why it came as no surprise when I learned that Serta also makes air mattresses. There are three types of Serta air mattress to choose from: Serta Basic Raised Air Mattress, Serta Raised NeverFLAT Air Mattress, and the Serta Raised Pillowtop Air Mattress. Each one fulfills a different role. You can find the Serta air mattress that will help you get a good night’s sleep.

Specifications

Because there are three different Serta air mattresses to choose from, it’s important to know the differences between them. This will help you make a more informed decision.

Serta Raised Air Bed with External AC Pump, Multiple Sizes

First up is the Serta raised basic air mattress. These air mattresses come in two sizes, double or queen. They are quite thick. The double is 17 inches thick while the queen is 15 inches thick. They are both filled with circular perpendicular coil tubes which provide comfortable support. The top is flocked so neither your nor your sheets will slide off at night.

Customers on Amazon rated this Serta air mattress 3.6 out of 5 stars, with most saying it does the job it was designed to do. Several people complained that the mattress deflated often, and it seems it only holds its shape for a couple of nights before it needs to be refilled with air.

Serta Raised Queen Air Mattress with Never Flat Pump
  • Two pumps in one bed, patented neverFLAT pump system silently keeps your airbed inflated all night
  • Primary pump automatically inflates and deflates your airbed in less than 4 minutes, secondary neverFLAT Pump monitors...
  • Convenient auto-shutoff feature on primary pump automatically turns the pump system off when the airbed is fully...

Next, we have the Serta raised NeverFLAT air mattress. This Serta air mattress gets around the issue of deflation with the addition of a second pump. The first pump is used to inflate the mattress. The super-quiet “NeverFLAT” pump keeps the mattress full of air all night. You’ll never wake up on the floor with this thing!

Because this mattress is 18-inches thick, you can get in and out of it like a real bed. It has 35 coiled tubes inside which provide lots of support. The flocked top is not only useful for making the mattress soft, but it also adds extra puncture-proof materials. This is one comfortable, and tough, air mattress.

Although Serta raves about this mattress, customers on Amazon only gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Many people loved how comfortable this mattress was, and the NeverFLAT pump works flawlessly. Unfortunately, the honeymoon seems to wear off, as after a few months the seams where the pump sits and around the inner coils start to come undone. Air seeps out and the mattress doesn’t work. There were quite a few complaints about this durability issue.

Lastly, we have the Serta raised pillowtop air mattress. This mattress includes a NeverFLAT pump as well as a comfortable pillow top. The 35 inner coils supporting the mattress provide extra comfort and stability. It is 18-inches thick, making this a large and comfortable air mattress that can fit any dorm or guest room. The mattress is made with puncture-resistant materials, although Serta doesn’t tell us what those are.

Customers on Amazon rated this Serta air mattress 3.5 out of 5 stars. People reviewed that the mattress is comfortable and large. The pillowtop adds a nice layer of soft comfort. Where the mattress failed was with the seams. A lot of people complained that the seams around the inner coils and the NeverFLAT pump just seem to wear out after a few uses. This seems to be a recurring trend with these mattresses.

Pricing and Warranty

These Serta air mattresses aren’t cheap. The Basic raised air mattress will cost you between $75 and $115. The raised NeverFlat mattress costs between $120 and $220, while the pillowtop NeverFLAT mattress costs between $135 and $230.

All Serta air mattresses come with a 1-year product guarantee, protecting you against manufacturing defects. The reviews on Amazon didn’t specify if they had attempted to get their mattresses replaced via warranty. I’m not sure if Serta considers it a manufacturing defect if the seams come loose after a few uses.

How Do They Compare?

After learning about the trouble people have with Serta air mattresses, you may have ruled them out. You would have good reasons to do this. Too many people complained about the seams splitting. The mattress becomes useless in this case. It’s important to remember that a lot of people also rated these mattresses very highly. It seems that the leakage issue only affects some mattresses and not everybody’s. If you purchase one, hopefully, you're one of the lucky individuals.

If that sounds like a reason to reconsider, you can see how well a Serta air mattress stacks up against the competition. Do they have the same problems? Are there better prices or warranties out there?

How I Reviewed

To compare the Serta air mattresses to the competition, I researched the four most similar air mattress offerings you can buy. I went to each company’s website to learn more about them.

Because I trust reviews by real people, I read through a lot of Amazon customer reviews. This way I was able to get a full picture for all of these air mattresses, and how they stack up to Serta air mattresses.

The Competition

CALIFORNIA KING KOIL UPGRADED LUXURY RAISED AIR MATTRESS

First up in this comparison is King Koil Luxury Raised Air Mattress. This air mattress is comparable to the Serta Raised Pillowtop Air Mattress. King Koil is a St. Paul, Minnesota-based company that’s been making mattresses since 1898! You can find their bedding, mattresses, and air mattresses at most major retailers, including Amazon.

This massive, 20-inch-thick air mattress includes a built-in pump. It has an extra-soft quilt-top pillow supported by rows of inner coils which inflate as separate chambers. The mattress itself is endorsed by the International Chiropractors Association, so it supports the spine very well. This mattress costs between $95 and $150. It comes with a one year warranty.

With that being said, I checked out Amazon reviews. Customers gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, which is higher than anything the Serta air mattresses received. Many people wrote that they were blown away by the quality of this air mattress. According to reviews, it holds up well to children jumping on it and heavy elderly people sitting on it. One woman even said she would give it six stars if she could! One area where people weren’t too happy was with the storage bag, which many said ripped easily after a couple of uses.

  • Waterproof flocked top raised 22 inches from floor with indented sides to keep your fitted sheets from slipping

Next, we have the Intex Elevated Comfort Air Mattress. This air mattress is comparable to the Serta Basic Raised Air Mattress. Intex Recreation Corp is a California-based company which makes above-ground swimming pools, flotation devices, air mattresses, and inflatable boats. Their first product was a beach ball, way back in 1966!

The elevated comfort air mattress is 22-inches thick. It has a built-in air pump for easy use. A flocked, waterproof top helps keep your sheets from slipping. This air mattress has several rows of “durabeams” inside it, which help give support when you’re lying on it. The Intex air mattress costs between $55 and $110. There is no warranty.

Although Intex is a big name in the air mattress world, customers on Amazon only gave this mattress 3.7 out of 5 stars. Most people said that the mattress did its job, and it was as comfortable as any other standard air mattress. One complaint a lot of people had was that the mattress just doesn’t stay inflated. Another person wrote that the mattress completely popped on them!

Coleman SupportRest Plus PillowStop Double-High Airbed, Queen
  • Inflatable air mattress offers a luxurious, comfortable night's sleep
  • PillowStop raised head keeps pillow in place to promote all-night comfort
  • Built-in 120-volt pump for rapid inflation and deflation

Third on our list is the Coleman Support Rest Air Mattress. The “SupportRest” Pillowtop Double-High Airbed by the world’s camping authority is comparable to both the Serta NeverFLAT and the Serta Pillowtop air mattresses. Coleman has been around since the days of whale-oil lamps. A young Alabama man with poor eyesight founded it.

This company makes excellent outdoor products such as coolers, lamps, tents, and, of course, air mattresses. The SupportRest Pillow Top Double High Airbed comes with a built-in 120-volt pump. It’s made with heavy-duty puncture-proof material, and it has a flocked pillow top for extra comfort. This air mattress costs between $65 and $100, and it comes with a comprehensive 1-year warranty.

Like most Coleman products, their air mattress rates highly. Customers on Amazon gave it 4.1 out of 5 stars. Almost all of the reviewers praised its firm sturdiness. It can hold a lot of weight and provides a stable night’s sleep. Some people did mention that what Coleman passes off as a queen-size is actually a double, while the double is a single.

Last on our list is the Active Era Premium Air Mattress. Active Era is a new company based in London, England. They started in 2016 with the goal towards helping people live active lifestyles, comfortably. They make tents, sleeping bags, outdoor clothing, and air mattresses, among other things.

The Active Era Premium Air Mattress has a built-in pump for easy inflation. It compares well with both the Serta Basic and the Serta NeverFLAT air mattresses. This mattress also comes with a built-in pillow, so you don’t need to bring your own. Just like the NeverFLAT offerings from Serta, the Active Era has built-in coils for support. It’s 20-inches thick, costs between $90 and $120, and comes with a one-year warranty.

Despite being very similar to the Serta air mattress, the Active Era receives much higher ratings on Amazon. Customers gave it 4.2 out of 5 stars. One man praised how tall it was and how well-built it was. It also seems to stay inflated much longer than other mattresses on this list. Some people were unhappy with how complicated it is to set up and take down.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Serta air mattresses certainly have their strengths, but they also seem to have a lot of weaknesses and one major design flaw. It’s important to remember that nothing in the real world is perfect. Amazon reviews are a great example of this, and every product has flaws.

Pros

  • NeverFLAT pump is innovative and keeps the mattress inflated.
  • Inner coils provide great support.
  • The pillowtop mattress is soft and comfortable.
  • Made by a well-respected brand.
  • One-year warranty.

Cons

  • Very expensive.
  • Major design flaw where the seams come apart, destroying the mattress.
  • Many complaints of mattress falling apart after only a few weeks.

My Final Verdict

Like I said earlier in this review, I take real customer testimonials very seriously. The Serta air mattresses are comfortable. I love the idea of a second pump to quietly keep the mattress inflated all night long. This has long been the bane of all air mattresses. It seems Serta is on to something here.

Unfortunately, there are just too many complaints of seams coming apart to ignore. The way the inner coils and the pump are put together has a major design flaw. You have no air mattress the moment one seam goes.
